Ellen and Annamarie’s moms seem worried about the girls talking to the soldiers because…well first of all they have guns. In the book, it says the gun was poking her backpack. I would not want to live in that time they are in because it would actually be very hard. I feel very bad for them. I don’t have any predictions for the book because I don’t really know what will happen.

  2. I think their moms were worried because they did not want the soldiers to not like them. Or they were scared that they would come to the house. They also did not want the soldiers to recognize them or know who they are, or who their kids are.
They were worried for their safety and their kids’ safety.

  3. The reason why I think Ellen’s and Annemarie’s moms seem very worried about them talking to the soldiers is because they might think the soldiers are dangerous for example in the text it says “ Mama looked troubled when she heard the news. “Are you sure” she asked several times” this can prove that Ellen’s and Annemarie’s moms think the soldiers are dangerous because the Hirch family was jewish and got taken away somewhere also Ellen’s family is jewish so if the soldiers find out that Ellen is jewish by them giving out to much information then they could take her.

  4. Annamarie and Ellen’s parents didn’t want them talking to the soldiers Because there strangers and they were carrying weapons. Another reason was the soldiers could hurt or kill them. Her parents did not want the soldiers to remember the girl’s face. Another reason that they needed to be careful was one of the girls was Jewish and the soldiers wanted to kill the Jewish people. The Hirsch family was missing and that made the parents nervous than ever before.

  5. I think that the casket doesn’t have someone in it. This is because the casket was closed and not open. In the text it says “ why is it not open?” This can prove that no one was in the coffin but there is a chance that there might be a body in the coffin because one of the soldiers asked Annemarie’s mom to open the coffin and she was until the soldier said he doesn’t want to see a disease body that died. Also wouldn’t Annemarie’s mom be scared to open the coffin if no one was in there?

  6. That’s my question. What’s in the casket.? What if there is nothing inside? What if there is something inside, but no one knows what (except the people who already read this book). I don’t want to guess. I don’t even want to try to guess! I feel like Annemarie already knows what inside, but she doesn’t.

There was nothing in the casket because there is no such thing as aunt Birtie. The funeral was a cover up for having those people over to the house. They gathered people at the farm house because they were going to escape the country. Ellen’s parents even showed up to meet her and travel somewhere with her. I think they were going to use uncle Heriks fishing boat to escape to another country. Peter was also there to help guide them to a new and safer place.

  8. In the text that says mama has never lied to me before never in all of the stories I’ve heard in all the older pictures I’ve seen has there been a great aunt birte . and in the text it said wild girls he said it is a sad event but not true sad really because she was very very old .

There was nothing in the casket. There might be but she knows for sure it was not aunt bertie. Because why would they have the casket closed? I think all the people that were there were jewish and they came there to be safe. But little did they know soldiers were going to come, but they did not take anyone or notice anything strange.

  10. Annemarie is running to uncle Henrik’s boat to give him an important envelope. Mr Rosen dropped it when he was getting in the boat. Annemarie mom seemed relay worried. Whatever is in the letter must be important. I think there might be money in the envelope for all of the people to survive on the other land. I also think Peter wanted it to go to Henrik because he would take care of it and give it to the people equally.

  11. In the book Number the Stars it doesn’t tell you what’s in the package but I think the package has a map to lead the people somewhere safeier and some more important stuff to survive the travel I think this because Peter, Hendrick, Ellen’s family, and those other random people at Annemarie’s uncle’s house is going somewhere but I don’t know where so they probably need to have a map to get to their location or it’s something else and they already know where they’re going.

  12. Annemarie is bringing Uncle Henrik the package since Mr. Rosen dropped it when he was getting into the boat. Annemarie’s mom broke or sprained her ankle so she couldn’t come with annemarie to drive the important package. This packet seems very important so i’m going to predict that there is a note or money in the package, and Annemarie is in the woods trying to get to Uncle Henrick.

  13. Ok. So Uncle Henrik gave this little packet to Ms. Rosen (Ellen’s mom). And when they were leaving to Uncle Henrik’s boat, Ms. Rosen tripped on the staircase and the little packet fell out and no one noticed. 20 minutes later Annemarie’s mom went to the boat with more people so it wasn’t suspicious. Annemarie started crying but then she was like “Mom should be back soon. No longer than 3:30 A.M.” So she took a small nap. But then the sunrise woke her up and it was only 4 o’clock and she’s like “The sun shouldn’t be up yet.” Then she thought her mom would be sleeping in the room that Kirsti and her mom shared but she wasn’t there. So she went outside and saw her mom on the ground. She went to her mom and her mom told her that she thinks she broke her leg. So they went on the staircase Ms. Rosen tripped on and sat there. Then Annemarie found the packet in between the stairs. Her mom told her that that’s the packet her uncle gave Ms. Rosen. Then Annemarie remembered that Ms. Rosen tripped and it must’ve fell out of her pocket. Then Annemarie said she is going to take the packet to her uncle and Ms. Rosen. And then Annemarie’s mom said “Ok, you can go. But first, bring your uncle some food.” So she went into the house and got an apple and some butter. She saw some bread so she added that. Then she made her way through the dark path thinking of the story “Little Red Riding Hood”. On the path, she then saw four armed soldiers with dogs.
Do I know what’s in the packet? No. But I think if anything goes wrong on Uncle Henrik’s boat, there are a couple of health things inside the packet.

  14. In number the stars in the last chapter we read before we had to stop Annamaries mom thinks she broke her leg, And when this happened Annanmarie started worrying about her mom since she was taking for ever. Then after all of that happened with the package Annamarie thought it would be a good idea to take the package to uncle Henrik because her mom did something to her leg, so she asked her mom if that would be ok and she said yes but, she had to bring her uncle some food. So Annamarie made and basket of apples and some bread and was on her way to her uncle Henrik’s. well she was on the path she saw four armed soldiers with dogs …. in this chapter it does not say what is in the package but i think its probably a back up plan or a map or something like money.

I am happy but a little sad at the end of the book. The reason why I am happy is because the war ended two years later and the people did not have to worry anymore. But there are some things that I am sad about also. One thing I am sad about is they said Peter had been killed. Also it never said that Ellen and her family returns. So that made me a little sad.

I think the way the book ended was fine. I thought that there was going to be way more big things going on in the last couple chapters but only a couple things big happened at the end but I liked how they did add an really important thing in the last two of chapters and that was that Peter died. I did like that a couple of big things happened in the last chapters, also I thought it was really cool that the author added a couple memories with Ellen like when Anniemarie found Ellen’s Jewish necklace after a long time Ellen was in Sweeten and she wore it to keep a memory with Anniemarie.

  17. Kinda i’m not sure if i’m happy with the ending because Peter died also I don’t know if Ellen and Annemarie will be able to see eachother again but Ellen’s family and those other people got away without getting caught by the soldiers so i’m kinda happy with the ending but not.

  18. The end surprised me so much. Especially the first paragraph. It said “The war would end. Uncle Henrik had said that, and it was true. The war ended almost two long years later. Annemarie was twelve.” The way it says “Annemarie was twelve” gave me the chills. It kind of scared me the first time I read it. But the good thing is that the war ended and people were outside cheering probably even crying tears of joy.

  19. The reason why I think Ellen’s and Annmarie’s moms seem very worried about them talking to the soldiers is because Ellen’s family is Jewish so if the soldiers find out that Ellen is Jewish they could take her.
